Internapalooza 2017 Recap

Internapalooza 2017

Thousands of interns, entrepreneurs and company executives gathered at AT&T Park in San Francisco for Internapalooza 2017. Founded by After School co-founder and COO Cory Levy, Internapalooza is the largest event for Silicon Valley interns.

The After School team participated, both at an exhibit table and as speakers. Levy and CEO Michael Callahan addressed the thousands of interns, alongside an impressive group of speakers made up of company executives and entrepreneurs: Andrew Ng (Coursera), Sunil Gunderia (Age Of Learning), Maria Zhang (Tinder), Drew Houston (Dropbox), Kristina Kolbas (Quicken Loans), Derrick Harris (ArchiTECHt), and investor and AngelList CEO Naval Ravikant.

Isha Salian from the San Francisco Chronicle described the 8th annual Internapalooza as “Virtual reality demos and ping-pong tables. A star-studded speaker series. A career fair with more than 40 companies. Swag. It was more than enough to attract 5,000 tech interns from more than 100 companies to AT&T Park one evening last week.”

Interns at Internapalooza 2017

“This is a cool event to be a part of. We get to meet the next generation of tech leaders and entrepreneurs,” said After School Vice President Jeff Collins, who was at the event.

During the registration period, interns were asked a series of questions about their backgrounds, from whether they are working on side projects to what school they attend. Here are a few things we learned from the questionnaires:

  • Even as busy full-time students working internships in the summer, they averaged a GPA of 3.61.
  • 33% of attendees were female, a significantly higher percentage than that of female executives and entrepreneurs currently in Silicon Valley.
  • 64% of interns were Asian or Pacific Islander, 20% white, 6% Hispanic, 5% Black or African American, and 6% other.
  • 52% of attendees were computer science majors.
  • The largest employers of interns in attendance were Google, Facebook, Salesforce, Apple, and Tesla.
  • Interns, all working in Silicon Valley for the summer, were from countries around the world. Several hundred interns from schools in Canada attended the event.

After School and other supporters enjoyed a night of networking with thousands of Silicon Valley’s top interns. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this group of interns will shake things up in the future, and hopefully several of them will do so at After School,” said Collins.
