On Thursday, August 2, After School along with dozens of companies, a handful of well-known speakers, and thousands of young interns took part in the 9th Annual Internapalooza at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Internapalooza is the largest gathering of Silicon Valley interns, young engineers, and STEM students in the world.
The interns came to the one-day event to meet and network with other interns, speak with representatives from Silicon Valley companies, and listen to advice from prominent business leaders from the tech community. The speaker lineup featured former Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, entrepreneur Daniel Gross, Ople Founder Pedro Alves, Hillary Cohen, and investor Elad Gil.
Asked by Fox 2 KTVU about the advice she gave to interns, Mayer said, “I told them and encouraged them to really take the opportunities where they’re going to learn the most.” She said that even though it can be riskier to work for smaller, early-stage companies, the benefits that come with working for a startup can outweigh the risks.
Interns took advantage of the opportunity to speak with and learn from startups and tech companies at the event. “I can easily say that it was one of the most insightful events that I attended in my time here in San Francisco. From extremely qualified speakers giving advice on topics that were directly relevant to what I was trying to accomplish, to meeting with recruiters from some of the largest tech companies in the world — I couldn’t be happier that I decided to attend Internapalooza,” said Owais, a junior from the University of Texas.
Exhibitors, including After School partner DoSomething.org, discussed job openings, internships, and even social change campaigns with attendees. DoSomething.org Marketing Manager Marissa Ranalli called the event a “huge success,” stating that they were able to register over 110 people to vote, which is nearly four times the average number of registrations at an event. After School is working with DoSomething.org to help After School app users to register to vote and encourage their friends and family to vote.
For After School, this was also our best event yet. A large group of engaged interns lined up outside our booth, asked questions about our app, anonymity, and plans for growth, and signed up to test a new app. Other companies with a presence at Internapalooza included Google, Bloomberg, Wish, Lumi Labs, AngelList, Cruise, Ople, and Surcle.
After School Co-Founder and COO Cory Levy began Internapalooza to bridge the game between skilled interns and opportunities to learn from and work with inspiring business leaders and promising companies. For more information or to get involved with Internapalooza, visit Internapalooza.com.
