After School and DoSomething.org are joining forces again to help teens register to vote. In a year-long series of campaigns titled “Change 💩,” After School is preparing to tackle issues from civic engagement to stress management to teen dating violence. The first of those campaigns, which will launch in September, will help teenagers vote in the upcoming midterm elections.
In 2016, After School, with partners including DoSomething.org, created a mock presidential election. Over 100,000 users voted and learned more about the election process and how to vote in the future. We are both hoping to reach even more this year.
DoSomething.org is a global movement for good that has reached over 6 million youth in 131 countries. The voter registration campaign with After School is part of DoSomething.org’s effort to register as many youth to vote as possible. “As DoSomething.org’s largest social media referrer, we are are dedicated to furthering the great work they’re doing, and we hope this campaign will spread awareness among teens of the upcoming midterm elections, and get them interested in participating in them,” says After School Vice President Jeff Collins.
Change 💩’s voter registration initiative includes an in-app prompt using an emoji. After the 💩 emoji is tapped, a student is presented with the message “Help Change 💩.” The next screen is an image of President Trump, and an option for users to state whether they currently approve or disapprove of the President. After selecting either option, the message “You Can Change 💩 By Voting” appears along with a button to click if interested in registering to vote. If a user clicks on “Show Me How,” they will then receive two text messages:
- The first short text provides a link to the DoSomething.org and After School voter registration page.
- A large percentage of After School users are under 18. For youth not yet old enough to register to vote, the second text helps them share voting information with their family and friends.
After School will continue to help facilitate youth engagement in the upcoming elections throughout the end of the year, and also use the Change 💩 campaign to bring awareness and action to teens on other issues that will impact their lives.
